Yankees vs. Red Sox

So the play offs are approaching. That means that major league baseball teams across the country are in a race to make it to the divisional series. Games in the next few weeks are very detrimental to teams’ successes this season. Flashback to April 2007. Everyone was joking about how horrible the Yankees were doing. Now they are second place in the American League East division and leading the wild card race. Tonight, they start a three game series against archrivals, Boston Red Sox. They will be playing in Boston at Fenway Park, which gives the Red Sox a slight advantage, as the Yankees will have to deal with intense Boston fans. This match up also will have important ramifications for both teams. Boston can either widen or shorten the 5.5 game lead that they currently hold over the Yankees. However, New York has a lot to gain if they can play well during these next three games. If they can pull off a sweep, this would give them an advantage in the American league East division. However if they still play well, they can widen their lead for the wild card. However, it seems unlikely that Boston Red Sox left fielder, Manny Ramirez, will be able to play in the series due to a strained left oblique that was injured during the last meeting with the Yankees. It’s never a dull moment when the Red Sox and the Yankees meet.

Without a doubt this series will be huge for both teams. However based on the result of the game last night, I have to give the advantage to the Yankees. Another interesting storyline coming into this series is if there will be retaliation against the Yankees for their rookie phenom Joba Chamberlin throwing at Kevin Youkilis' head twice during the last series. Either way, the series should be very interesting.
